Chapter 32
1 "Give R985 ear, O heavens, and let me speak; And let the earth hear the words of my mouth. 2 "Let R986 my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As R987 the droplets on the fresh grass And as the showers on the herb. 3 "For R988 I proclaim the name of the LORD; Ascribe R989 greatness to our God! 4 "The R990 Rock! His work is perfect, For R991 all His ways are just; F510 A R992 God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He. 5 "They R993 F511 have acted corruptly toward Him, They are not His children, because of their defect; But R994 are a perverse and crooked generation. 6 "Do you thus repay R995 the LORD, O R996 foolish and unwise people? Is R997 not He your Father who has bought you? He R998 has made you and established you.
7 "Remember the days of old, Consider the years of all generations. Ask R999 your father, and he will inform you, Your elders, and they will tell you. 8 "When R1000 the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, When He separated the sons of man, F512 He set the boundaries of the peoples According R1001 to the number of the sons of Israel. 9 "For R1002 the LORD'S portion is His people; Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance. 10 "He R1003 found him in a desert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; He encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the R1004 pupil of His eye. 11 "Like R1005 an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers over its young, He R1006 spread His wings and caught them, He carried them on His pinions. 12 "The R1007 LORD alone guided him, And R1008 there was no foreign god with him. 13 "He R1009 made him ride on the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of the field; And R1010 He made him suck honey from the rock, And oil R1011 from the flinty rock, 14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs, And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats, With R1012 the finest of the wheat-- And of the blood R1013 of grapes you drank wine.
15 "But R1014 Jeshurun F513 grew fat and kicked-- You are grown fat, thick, and sleek-- Then R1015 he forsook God who R1016 made him, And scorned the R1017 Rock of his salvation. 16 "They R1018 made Him jealous with strange gods; With R1019 abominations they provoked Him to anger. 17 "They R1020 sacrificed to demons who were not God, To R1021 gods whom they have not known, New R1022 gods who came lately, Whom your fathers did not dread. 18 "You neglected the R1023 Rock who begot you, And R1024 forgot the God who gave you birth.
19 "The R1025 LORD saw this, and spurned them Because R1026 of the provocation of His sons and daughters. 20 "Then He said, `I will hide My face from them, I R1027 will see what their end shall be; For R1028 they are a perverse generation, Sons R1029 in whom is no faithfulness. 21 `They R1030 have made Me jealous with what is not God; They have provoked Me to anger with their idols. R1031 F514 So R1032 I will make them jealous with those who are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation, 22 For R1033 a fire is kindled in My anger, And burns to the lowest part of Sheol, F515 And R1034 consumes the earth with its yield, And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains. 23 `I R1035 will heap misfortunes on them; I R1036 will use My arrows on them. 24 `They R1037 will be wasted by famine, and consumed by plague F516 And R1038 bitter destruction; And R1039 the teeth of beasts I will send upon them, With R1040 the venom of crawling things of the dust. 25 `Outside R1041 the sword will bereave, And inside terror-- Both R1042 young man and virgin, The nursling with the man of gray hair.
26 `I would have said, "I R1043 will cut them to pieces, I R1044 will remove the memory of them from men," 27 Had I not feared the provocation by the enemy, That their adversaries would misjudge, That they would say, "Our R1045 hand is triumphant, F517 And the LORD has not done all this."' 28 "For R1046 they are a nation lacking F518 in counsel, And there is no understanding in them. 29 "Would R1047 that they were wise, that they understood this, That R1048 they would discern their future! F519 30 "How R1049 could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock R1050 had sold them, And the LORD had given them up? 31 "Indeed their rock is not like our Rock, Even R1051 our enemies themselves F520 judge this. 32 "For their vine is from the vine of Sodom, And from the fields of Gomorrah; Their grapes are grapes of poison, R1052 Their clusters, bitter. 33 "Their wine is the venom of serpents, F521 And the deadly F522 poison of cobras. 34 `Is R1053 it not laid up in store with Me, Sealed up in My treasuries? 35 `Vengeance R1054 is Mine, and retribution, In R1055 due time their foot will slip; For R1056 the day of their calamity is near, And the impending things are hastening upon them.' 36 "For R1057 the LORD will vindicate His people, And R1058 will have compassion on His servants, When He sees that their strength F523 is gone, And there is none remaining, bond or free. 37 "And He will say, `Where R1059 are their gods, The rock in which they sought refuge? 38 `Who R1060 ate the fat of their sacrifices, And drank the wine of their drink offering? Let R1061 them rise up and help you, Let them be your hiding place!
39 `See R1062 now that I, I am He, And R1063 there is no god besides Me; It R1064 is I who put to death and give life. I R1065 have wounded and it is I who heal, And R1066 there is no one who can deliver from My hand. 40 `Indeed, I R1067 lift up My hand to heaven, And say, as I live forever, 41 If R1068 I sharpen My flashing F524 sword, And My hand takes hold on justice, I R1069 will render vengeance on My adversaries, And I will repay those who hate Me. 42 `I R1070 will make My arrows drunk with blood, And R1071 My sword will devour flesh, With the blood of the slain and the captives, From the long-haired leaders F525 of the enemy.' 43 "Rejoice, R1072 O nations, with His people; For R1073 He will avenge the blood of His servants, And R1074 will render vengeance on His adversaries, And R1075 will atone for His land and His people."
44 Then Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he, with Joshua R1076 F526 the son of Nun. 45 When Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel, 46 he said to them, "Take R1077 to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command your R1078 sons to observe carefully, F527 even all the words of this law. 47 "For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it R1079 is your life. And by R1080 this word you will prolong your days in the land, which F528 you are about to cross the Jordan to possess." F529 48 The R1081 LORD spoke to Moses that very same day, saying, 49 "Go R1082 up to this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab opposite F530 Jericho, and look at the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession. 50 "Then die on the mountain where you ascend, and be gathered R1083 to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people, 51 because R1084 you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness R1085 of Zin, because you did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel. 52 "For R1086 you shall see the land at a distance, but you R1087 shall not go there, into the land which I am giving the sons of Israel."
Chapter 33
1 Now this is the blessing with which Moses the R1088 man of God blessed the sons of Israel before his death. 2 He said, "The R1089 LORD came from Sinai, And R1090 dawned F531 on them from Seir; He R1091 shone forth from Mount Paran, And He came from the R1092 midst F532 of ten thousand holy ones; At R1093 His right hand there was flashing F533 lightning for them. 3 "Indeed, R1094 He loves the F534 people; All R1095 Your F535 holy ones are in Your hand, And R1096 they followed F536 in Your steps; Everyone receives of Your words. 4 "Moses R1097 charged us with a law, A R1098 possession for the assembly of Jacob. 5 "And R1099 He was king in Jeshurun, When the heads of the people were gathered, The tribes of Israel together.
6 "May R1100 Reuben live and not die, Nor his men be few." 7 And R1101 this regarding Judah; so he said, "Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, And bring him to his people. With his hands he contended for them, F537 And may You be a help against his adversaries."
8 Of Levi he said, "Let Your Thummim R1102 and Your Urim belong to Your F538 godly R1103 man, Whom R1104 You proved at Massah, With whom You contended at the waters of Meribah; 9 Who R1105 said of his father and his mother, `I did not consider them'; And he did not acknowledge his brothers, Nor did he regard his own sons, For they R1106 observed Your word, And kept Your covenant. 10 "They R1107 shall teach Your ordinances to Jacob, And Your law to Israel. They R1108 shall put incense before F539 You, And whole R1109 burnt offerings on Your altar. 11 "O LORD, bless his substance, And accept the work of his hands; Shatter the loins of those who rise up against him, And those who hate him, so that they will not rise again."
12 Of Benjamin he said, "May R1110 the beloved of the LORD dwell in security by Him, Who R1111 shields him all the day, And R1112 he dwells between His shoulders." 13 Of Joseph he said, "Blessed R1113 of the LORD be his land, With the choice things of heaven, with the dew, And from the deep lying beneath, 14 And with the choice yield of the sun, And with the choice produce of the months. 15 "And with the best F540 things of the R1114 ancient mountains, And with the choice things of the everlasting hills, 16 And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness, And the favor of R1115 Him who dwelt in the bush. Let it come to the head of Joseph, And to the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers. 17 "As the firstborn of his ox, majesty is his, And his horns are the horns of the R1116 wild ox; With them he will push R1117 the peoples, All at F541 once, to the ends of the earth. And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And those are the thousands of Manasseh."
18 Of R1118 Zebulun he said, "Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going forth, And, Issachar, in your tents. 19 "They R1119 will call peoples to the mountain; There they will offer righteous R1120 sacrifices; For they will draw F542 out the R1121 abundance of the seas, And the hidden treasures of the sand." 20 Of R1122 Gad he said, "Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad; He lies down as R1123 a lion, F543 And tears the arm, also the crown of the head. 21 "Then R1124 he provided F544 the first part for himself, For R1125 there the ruler's portion was reserved; F545 And R1126 he came with the leaders of the people; He R1127 executed the justice of the LORD, And His ordinances with Israel."
22 Of R1128 Dan he said, "Dan is a R1129 lion's whelp, That leaps forth from Bashan." 23 Of Naphtali he said, "O R1130 Naphtali, satisfied with favor, And full of the blessing of the LORD, Take possession of the sea and the south." 24 Of R1131 Asher he said, "More blessed than sons is Asher; May he be favored by his brothers, And R1132 may he dip his foot in oil. 25 "Your R1133 locks will be iron and bronze, And R1134 according to your days, so will your leisurely walk be.
26 "There R1135 is none like the God of Jeshurun, F546 Who R1136 rides the heavens to F547 your help, And through the skies in His majesty. 27 "The R1137 eternal God is a dwelling F548 place, And R1138 underneath are the everlasting arms; And R1139 He drove out the enemy from before you, And R1140 said, `Destroy!' 28 "So R1141 Israel dwells in security, The R1142 fountain of Jacob secluded, In R1143 a land of grain and new wine; His R1144 heavens also drop down dew. 29 "Blessed R1145 are you, O Israel; Who R1146 is like you, a people saved by the LORD, Who R1147 is the shield of your help And R1148 the sword of your majesty! So R1149 your enemies will cringe before you, And R1150 you will tread upon their high places."
Chapter 34
1 Now R1151 Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the LORD showed R1152 him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, 2 and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the western R1153 F549 sea, 3 and the Negev F550 and the plain in the valley of Jericho, the R1154 city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. 4 Then the LORD said to him, "This is the land which I R1155 swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, `I will give it to your descendants'; F551 I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there."
5 So Moses the R1156 servant of the LORD died R1157 there in the land of Moab, according to the word F552 of the LORD. 6 And He buried him in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite R1158 Beth-peor; but no R1159 man knows his burial place to this day. 7 Although Moses was one R1160 hundred and twenty years old when he died, his R1161 eye was not dim, nor his vigor abated. 8 So the sons of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses came to an end.
9 Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled R1162 with the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. 10 Since that time no R1163 prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the R1164 LORD knew face to face, 11 for all the signs and wonders which the LORD sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, 12 and for all the mighty power F553 and for all the great terror which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.

Daily Devotional
Highlights:
The prophetic Song of Moses (Deut. 32:1-43). Don't miss "the Words of Life" and how to prolong your days (32:46-47)! Moses blessed the 12 tribes; death of Moses on Mount Nebo; Joshua succeeds Moses.
Verses for Today:
Ascribe ye greatness unto our God. He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of Truth and without iniquity, just and right is He (Deut. 32:3-4).
Moses foretold the blessings and happiness the Israelites would have if they lived in obedience to the Word of God (33:6-29). After conferring spiritual blessings upon each of the tribes, Moses concluded with praise to God: The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee (33:27). Although it is written: There arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face (34:10), he forfeited the privilege of leading Israel into Canaan because of his sin (32:48-52; comp. Num. 20:1-13). Thus he became an example for all Israel that God is Holy and cannot allow His Word to be broken without consequences.
Moses' life had been almost perfect. However, even though he had been the Lord's lawgiver, he sinned by striking the rock, and the Law did not permit one exception. For whosoever shall keep the whole Law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all (James 2:10).
Just before his death, Moses is seen alone, climbing one of the most prominent mountain peaks in Moab from which he could view the promised land though he could not personally enter it. Moses' penalty illustrates that even forgiveness of sin does not remove its earthly consequences.
Centuries later, Moses, symbolizing the Law of God, stood on Mount Hermon in the promised land with Elijah, who symbolized the prophets of God. Together they talked with Jesus as He was transfigured before them: and His face did shine as the sun, and His raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias (Elijah) talking with Him. Then answered Peter, and said . . . let us make here three tabernacles; one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias (Elijah). While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud . . . said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him (Matt. 17:2-5).
Thought for Today:
For the Commandment is a lamp; and the Law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life (Prov. 6:23).
Christ Revealed:
As our Rock (Deut. 32:31). Christ was that spiritual Rock (Petra) that followed (accompanied) them (I Cor. 10:4).
